Berkeley County Historical Society

Preserving history in a community helps people understand where they come from and learn from the past in order to move into the future. It is the responsibility of historical societies to gather and archive valuable documentation and artifacts that can be used to teach others about the history of an area. That is one of the goals of the Berkeley County Historical Society.

What is the Berkeley County Historical Society?

The Berkeley County Historical Society is an organization dedicated to the preservation of history in Berkeley County in West Virginia. We accomplish this through the collection, preservation, and sharing of historical documents and other historical artifacts. By collecting and preserving these items, the Berkeley County Historical Society is creating an archive that tells the story of the past in Berkeley County, West Virginia. By preserving our history, we can return to it and learn from our past as we move into the future.

What the Berkeley County Historical Society has to offer

There are two primary aspects to the Historical Society.

The Archives & Research Center, which is open by appointment only, holds our archives and research. This arm of the Historical Society offers research assistance for students, educators, researchers or others who want to know more about the history of Berkeley County or are researching something in particular.

The Belle Boyd House is home to the Berkeley County Museum. In addition, the house, which is decorated in Victorian Style, is available for events, meetings, and seminars. Any temporary or traveling exhibits are housed at the Belle Boyd House, which is open Sunday-Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. (except major holidays).

In addition to special exhibits at the Belle Boyd House, the Berkeley County Historical Society hosts local events that highlight the county’s history and the people who made Berkeley County what it is today. You can look at the events on our website to find out what’s coming up on the calendar.
